Our Experience with Mondly Kids in Review

Mondly Kids Review: What was tested?

I tested the Android app for Italian. Each day, I completed select lessons, keeping an eye on the learning approach and also exploring the additional features. I used the Mondly Kids app for 14 days to gauge the learning impact and assess the didactic design of this kids’ language course.

Scope and Features: What does Mondly Kids offer in the review?

Essentially, Mondly Kids is a children’s language course presented as an Android/iOS app. There’s no dedicated computer version. Hence, all learning is done on a smartphone or tablet, which is by design, as many exercises involve swiping. That’s not a problem, since kids nowadays often encounter phones and tablets earlier than traditional PCs.

Mondly Kids Shines in the Review with a Broad Range of Content

Mondly Kids includes a child-friendly course in 33 different languages, mirroring the range of seldom-taught options found in adult Mondly. That’s a major advantage—sourcing material for rare languages is already difficult for adults, and even more so for children. This is a big plus for the app.

Didactic approach: How well do children learn with Mondly Kids?

This app employs a well-thought-out didactic strategy, but, as the name suggests, it’s strictly for children. Adults or older kids might find it too bright and loud. For ages around 5–11, however, it’s great—definitely more beneficial than many regular video games. I would consider 11 a bit high; it’s probably best suited for slightly younger children.

How Does Language Learning with Mondly Kids Actually Work?

Learners progress through matching and selection tasks. Each word is voiced, and the lessons include both single words and short phrases. One topic lesson is estimated at around 120 minutes total, split into smaller exercises. Thanks to the picture–word associations, kids retain new vocabulary easily. It’s somewhat like a children’s picture dictionary in app form.

Like adult Mondly, Mondly Kids incorporates multiple learning techniques, though the variety of exercise types is smaller than in the grown-up version. An exercise block is done in about five minutes, a time kids can handle comfortably.

At the end of each topic, a review lesson reinforces all the newly introduced words and phrases.

There are no conjugation tables. In the lessons I tried, the focus was mostly on nouns, such as different animals in the “Animals” topic.

A statistics section, showing how many consecutive days the child has learned, helps motivate continued use.

The app isn’t linear, meaning you can start with any theme. Some may see that as a drawback if they prefer a structured approach, but it lets kids pick subjects that interest them. For structured learners, they can simply begin with the first lesson and move through to the last.

Daily lessons are much shorter than regular lessons, so even on days kids have little time or inclination, they can preserve their “learning streak” by doing just the daily exercise—often just 1–3 minutes of effort, in our Mondly Kids experience.

Added Value via Multiple Sensory Channels

We at talkREAL strongly believe in the idea of individual learning styles, though we’re hesitant to apply it to children one-to-one. Frankly, we haven’t found solid scientific evidence prescribing specific learning recommendations for kids based on that concept.

Looking at how babies acquire language, it’s always a combination of seeing and hearing. A good app simulates that approach well, and Mondly Kids excels here.

By combining images, sound, and text, multiple senses are engaged. Children process a lot visually, and the lively colors only help. Unlike some apps, Mondly Kids uses just one image per word, guaranteeing clear, one-to-one associations.

Additionally, because the lessons are arranged by theme, kids learn new words in context, which is excellent.

The Small Catch and Two Wishes

The app has no further add-ons. Kids simply work through either the daily or main course lessons. Speech recognition would’ve been a welcome feature, as well as a way to connect with other kids—like the adult Mondly app—though with no direct interaction for safety. That could really boost motivation.

A two-player mini-game might also be interesting. We’ll see if Mondly adds more features down the line.

Unfortunately, you can’t independently turn off the music and applause while keeping word audio on. If a child wants to use the app in the car without headphones, the extra sounds can be annoying to parents. That’s definitely an area for improvement.

Gamification – Building Up Streaks

Mondly Kids gamifies learning in two ways: the content itself is very playful, and it tracks streaks, i.e., consecutive days of learning. If you’re thinking Mondly took a page from our SprachlernHACKS, you’re not alone. Our X-HACK also uses this psychological principle to help learners build consistent study habits.

Interim Conclusion: Didactics in the Mondly Kids Review

Overall, the core functions are extremely kid-friendly and well-executed, featuring bright colors, cute little characters, and applause for correct responses. The visuals are definitely geared toward children, and the approach addresses multiple sensory channels. Meanwhile, lessons remain short to accommodate shorter attention spans. Conclusion: Highly recommended!

User-Friendliness: How easy is it to use Mondly Kids?

A children’s language course must of course be user-friendly, requiring minimal explanation. Mondly Kids proves simple and intuitive in our review. That said, if you’re used to other apps, you might look for advanced features that aren’t there. You shouldn’t judge it by adult standards.

Even the profile is quite basic—which is actually good for data privacy. Beyond a name and email, no data is shown. There’s an option to link Facebook, which doesn’t make sense for Mondly Kids’ target age group since they’re legally too young for Facebook anyway.

Target Group: Who is Mondly Kids for?

Mondly Kids is truly aimed at children aged roughly 5 to around 11. You can choose between “kindergarten” or “school” mode, which affects the difficulty of vocabulary. Older kids might not enjoy it as much—adult Mondly would be more suitable for them.

Mondly suggests 11–12 as the upper limit, but I’d say 9–10 is more realistic, depending on the child’s interests.

Mondly Kids and Bilingual Parenting

Based on our experience with Mondly Kids, we find it a solid tool for supporting bilingual upbringing. Depending on the approach, the app can spark children’s interest in a second or third language.

Still, we see it mostly as a supplementary tool and have compiled additional strategies for effective bilingual parenting.

Value for Money: Is Mondly Kids worth it?

Mondly Kids is subscription-based, but there’s a cost-saving trick you can use.
