Our Story: The talkREAL Journey
The story about talkREAL began in 2012 with its founding by Christian Roth. What started as a personal project evolved into a platform that supports people worldwide in learning languages. The trigger was a special challenge: after an operation, Christian lost almost all of his language skills – he suffered from word-finding difficulties in German, and his foreign language skills had completely disappeared.
The arduous path back led him through innovative learning approaches like the Birkenbihl method and the question: “How does our brain really work when learning languages?” The answer was the cornerstone for the development of talkREAL.org, the transREAL method, and the later-developed LanguageLearningHACKS.
From Idea to Platform
talkREAL emerged from Christian’s desire to share the insights and learning methods he had gained with others. At the same time, he recognized the growing importance of language learning apps and online courses, which became increasingly popular with the smartphone boom.

talkREAL began to test language learning products not just superficially, but intensively over several weeks to evaluate long-term motivation, user-friendliness, and actual learning success. The goal was clear from the start: to help people find the best language course for their individual needs.
The Vision of YouDu
In 2014, talkREAL gave rise to another exciting idea: the development of its own language learning app based on the transREAL method. With this vision, Christian participated in the Google-sponsored Start-Up Weekend RheinMain in Frankfurt and won the competition – a milestone for talkREAL. This success led to the further development of the app, which was named YouDu. Just one year later, the project triumphed again, winning the first German Startup Weekend Education in Cologne. With great motivation, the YouDu team presented the app in 2016 at the renowned Web Summit in Dublin – one of the world’s largest technology conferences. Discussions with investors were promising, but the search for long-term technical support remained a challenge. When the third CTO left the project in the same year, app development had to be discontinued due to a lack of funding.
Refocusing on talkREAL’s Core Strengths
After this chapter, Christian refocused entirely on the language learning blog, talkREAL. Together with his team, he developed new products like the LanguageLearningHACKS – neurodidactic learning tips based on brain functions – as well as the learning style analysis. Language course reviews have since become the heart of the website, testing not only online language courses but also classic self-study courses like ASSiMiL to reflect the diversity of the market.

Since 2020, freelancers Katrin Adam and Andreas Klingler have strengthened the team. Andreas, who learned Spanish and Portuguese autodidactically, contributes his technical expertise and experience with the “Tandem Rhein-Main” platform. Katrin speaks several languages fluently, including Korean and Japanese, and enriches talkREAL with her passion for cultural learning. Together, they continue to help thousands of people achieve their language learning goals.
